Newtown High School's girls' track and field team placed eighth at the State Open at Middletown High School on June 9. The Hawks scored 19 points. Darien, with 45.75, took top honors.

Jenna Calandro earned second in the pole vault event with a vault of 11-06. Darien’s Madeleine Schneider won the competition with an effort of 12 feet. Amy Anyoha took third in the discus event with a throw of 115-03, and Micaela Nowacki was fourth with a throw of 114-00. Hailey Conrad, the only freshman competing in the 400, placed tenth in a time of 1:00.

Calandro, Anyoha, and Nowacki all qualified for the New England championship meet to be held in at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts on June 14. Calandro, however, will miss the competition as she will be participating in the national championships in North Carolina on that same day.

“It has been a pleasure as a coach this season to work with the entire team. It was a great group of girls who all worked very hard and were very successful,” Newtown Coach Doug Russell said.
