Nighthawk Squads Battle In Playoffs

Newtown High School’s baseball team visited Notre Dame-Fairfield in the South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday, May 24. The fourth-seeded Lancers defeated the No. 5 Nighthawks 4-2.

The Newtown softball team, also seeded fifth, won its conference tourney opener with a 1-0 blanking of host Pomperaug of Southbury, the No. 4 team, on May 26. The Nighthawks advanced to play top-seeded Lauralton Hall of Milford in the semifinals on Tuesday, May 27 (4 pm at Sacred Heart University).

On the lacrosse fields, the girls’ and boys’ squads from NHS had first round byes to set up Tuesday, May 27 semifinal contests. The girls, seeded second in the Division I SWC bracket, were slated to entertain No. 3 New Fairfield at predetermined neutral site Blue & Gold Stadium at 5 pm. The boys, also the No. 2 seed in their D-I bracket, were scheduled to play No. 3 New Milford in a semifinal-round game at 5 pm. New Fairfield High was designated the boys’ tourney’s semifinal location.

Also on Tuesday, the SWC track and field championships were set to unfold at Bunnell High School in Stratford, beginning at 4 pm.
