Free Seminar On New Arthritis Treatments

WATERBURY — A local arthritis specialist will review new treatments for arthritis at a seminar on Wednesday, May 16, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, at Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging. The Arthritis Foundation and Area Agency on Aging are co-sponsoring the free program for people with arthritis and their families.

Susan Stocker Glies, MD, a rheumatologist at the Comprehensive Center for Arthritis of Waterbury Hospital, will present information on diagnosis and new treatments. She will outline new medications as well as non-medical therapies for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, two common types of arthritis.

The free seminar is part of a national awareness program called Discoveries! Exploring Options in Arthritis Management. The Arthritis Foundation and National Council on Aging developed the program, which is sponsored by Pharmacia and Pfizer, Inc.

Arthritis affects an estimated one in five state residents, including half of those age 65 and older. That number is expected to grow dramatically in the next two decades as baby boomers age, according to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For more information or to register for the arthritis seminar, contact the Arthritis Foundation at 800-541-8350 or info.sne@arthritis.org, or the Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging at 800-994-9422.
