Friday Farmers’ Market

At Griffin Hospital

DERBY — Griffin Hospital’s employees, physicians, and volunteers — as well as its patients, visitors and area residents — can enjoy the freshness and convenience of buying locally grown produce right at the hospital’s front door. The hospital’s on-site farmers’ market is just one of many health-related programs that is sponsored by the hospital’s worksite wellness program, WINFIT (Wellness Initiatives for Improved Tomorrows)

The farmers’ market will be held every Friday through October 26 from 2 to 6 pm in the portico just outside of the hospital’s main entrance.

“The goal of Griffin’s worksite wellness program is to create an environment that makes the healthy choice the easy choice” according to Beth Comerford, deputy director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, who works with the hospital to develop various initiatives for the wellness program. “What better way than to bring the market to our employees; I’m personally delighted that we are able to offer this to our community and to support the local economy.”

Stone Gardens Farm of Shelton, and Bishop Farms of Cheshire are participating in this venture. Stone Gardens Farm owners Fred and Stacia Monahan will be providing a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers, while Bishop Farms owner Kevin Clark will round out the offerings with a variety of seasonal fruits and fresh baked goods. In addition to providing locally grown fruits and vegetables, the WINFIT committee will also have weekly newsletters and recipes available at the market and is planning weekly demonstrations and tasting in the hospital’s cafeteria.
