This week in 1990

Steve Smith launched three home runs and Doug Dean, Bill Pond, and Jay Marple

all had three hits as ReMax defeated Tony DeCarlo's Question Mark Cafe 18-9 in

the loser's bracket finals of the Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball League's 'A'

Division. The loss eliminated Question Mark from playing in the championship

game for the first time in 17 years. Earlier that afternoon, outfielder Ray

Forestieri reached over the fence and robbed Gene Chappell of a grand slam as

Gervais Bros Roofing defeated Question Mark 5-4, dealing the defending champs

their first loss of the double-elimination tourney.

This week in 1985

Eleven-year-old Patty Murren passed on the Newtown Tennis Association's Junior

Stroock Tournament to play with the adults in the 12th Annual Bertram A.

Strook Tournament. Murren, at 4-foot-8 and 70 pounds, then proceeded to win

the women's singles title, the women's doubles title, and the mixed doubles

crown as well. Murren defeated defending champion Marie Capozzi in the

semifinal round and then knocked off Carol Harrison in the finals. Murren then

teamed with Capozzi to win the doubles title and with Leon Barkman to win

mixed doubles. Mark Bloomberg defeated Jeff Bernstein for the men's title.

This week in 1980

Chatts Zeletes and Rick Matern each banged three-run homers as Hertberg

Associates crushed Church Hill Gastop 19-3 in the first round of the Newtown

Slo-Pitch Softball 'A' Division playoffs. George Matern went 4-for-4 for the

winners as well and Rainer Ertl was 3-for-4. In 'B' Division action, Billy

Girard hit a triple and a home run and Jim Galcker and Jack Hurray each had

three hits in leading the Jaycees to a 9-8 playoff win over the Police.

This week in 1975

Newtown resident, John Proterra attended an open tryout with the New York

Yankees and struck out six of the seven batters he faced. The hard-throwing

lefty was in his senior year at Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute after

having attended St Rose School and gone to private school at Cranwell School

in Massachusetts. After the tryout, the Yankees invited the 20-year-old

Proterra back.

This week in 1970

The new Newtown High School opened its doors and the fall sports teams began

practicing on their new facilities for the first time ever. The 1970 fall

season would yield an undefeated WCC champion football team - the first ever

at NHS.

This week in 1965

As a construction crew worked to remove floorboards while repairing the

auditorium floor at Hawley School, the ceiling of the school's gymnasium -

which was beneath the auditorium - collapsed causing a school-wide power

outage. Electricity was restored, however, for the first day of school

although gym class was postponed for a while.

This week in 1960

The Newtown High School soccer team took to the practice fields behind

returning veterans Jim Tenney, Ron Beardsley, John Norwell, Lee Benedict,

Henrey Figlewski, Roger Fazzino, and Peter Simon. Coach Bob Sveda was hoping

that his team could make up for the graduation loss of leading scorer, Bob

Miller.

This week in 1955

Head coach Joe Ozanne and his Newtown High soccer team began praciting for the

new fall season and the schedule which would include Litchfield, Watertown,

Yale, and Thomaston.

This week in 1950

Fred Weckworth defeated Alan Holmes 6-3 and 9-7 to win the championship of the

Newtown Country Club Tennis Tournament. In the junior girls' tournament, also

at NCC, Joan Lawler beat Claudia Palmer 6-4 and 6-1 in the finals.
