Flagpole Photographers Camera Club’s May programming offers a selection of workshops, competitions, and presentations open to photographers of all experience levels.

The month begins with the club’s annual Workshop Day on Saturday, May 2. This guided experience will explore the historic charm of Newtown and Sandy Hook, with outdoor sessions followed by an indoor digital darkroom workshop focused on enhancing images for printing, competition, and social media.

Cost is $25 per person (free for club members), which includes membership for the remainder of the season. Participants will meet at The Pleasance, 1 Main Street, at 8:50 am, and a full itinerary is available on the club’s website.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be presented at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street.

The annual Competition and Exhibit Awards Presentation will then take place Sunday, May 3, recognizing outstanding photography across multiple categories. Awards will be presented for top entries in each category, as well as Best in Show, Judges’ Choice, and People’s Choice.

The event will be held online at 2 pm, with viewing details available on the club’s website.

Later in the month, the club will present Illuminating the Night: A Light Painting Program on Thursday, May 14, at 7:30 pm, at the senior center. This interactive session will introduce participants to the art of light painting, a photographic technique that uses handheld light sources and long exposures to create vivid, abstract images.

The program is open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to bring a camera or smartphone and a tripod.

The month will conclude with the club’s regular monthly competition on Thursday, May 28. Social time will begin at 7 pm, followed by the competition at 7:30.

Categories include Nature, Open Color, Open Monochrome, Assigned Subject, and Monthly Challenge. The assigned subject for May is “Flowers,” and the Monthly Challenge theme is “Tilted.” The event will be held both in person at the senior center and online.
