Work Of Newtown Artist In New England Quilt Museum
Two quilts by quilt artist Connie Harris Fraser, of 9 Grand Place in Newtown, have been selected for a summer exhibit of humorous quilts at New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Mass. âIn Stitches: Quilts with a Sense of Humorâ will display 32 pieces on the lighter side of quilting from June 7 to August 19. Ms Fraserâs two works were juried into the show from a large number of entries from quilt artists across the country.
âShe Who Laughs, Last!â by Mrs Fraser features 25 humorous quotations about women surrounded by vignettes of women from a variety of commercial fabrics. âIt Takes All Kinds!â â her second accepted entry â showcases 36 âwomen of characterâ bordered by a variety of âwomen-wordsâ appliqued in ultrasuede.
Mrs Fraserâs colorful and innovative approach to humor has won her numerous awards and prizes in national and international competitions. Her techniques include phototransfers and rubber stamps on fabric she has hand-dyed. She hand quilts her large pieces with brightly colored quilting threads to complement her original block designs.
Mrs Fraserâs art quilts have been published in Quilters Newsletter Magazine, Quilting Today, Ladyâs Circle Patchwork Quilts magazine, Award Winning Quilts and Their Makers and in the American Quilterâs Society International quilt art calendar. She does quilt lectures and workshops in New York and New Jersey as well as Connecticut. Ms Fraser is employed in the document control group of Dade Behring Global Instrument Manufacturing, Brookfield.
