ON THE ROAD/SHANNON HICKS

MIND TYDES will be at Toad's Place in New Haven on Thursday, January 28. The

show will begin at 8 pm, and there are vouchers available that will provide a

discount on admission at the door. Anyone interested in receiving a voucher

can contact the band at MindTyde@aol.com (note the lack of the S in the band's

name when you're entering the address on your email) or write to PO Box 725,

Newtown 06470 and they will be mailed out.

On January 30, two of the four bands to take top honors in the 1998

Connecticut magazine Readers' Poll will be performing at The Palace Theatre in

New Haven. Being billed as "The Best of the Best Concert," the concert will

offer performances by EIGHT TO THE BAR, FABULOUS FARQUHAR and THE GALVANIZED

JAZZ BAND (missing from the bill is the winning Big Band entry, the SONNY

COSTANZO BIG BAND, which carries on its founder's memory as

artists-in-residence at Quinnipiac College in Hamden).

Eight to the Bar was named Best Connecticut Rock Band, Galvanized was named

Best Jazz Band, and The Fabulous Farquhar, well, is just great entertainment.

Tickets run $13.50 to $17.50 for the show, and can be reserved through

Pro-Tix, 860/422-0000.

The Newtown band PLAYBACK, which will be featured in next week's "Enjoy"

section, is getting ready for its debut CD Release Party later this month. The

band -- Bob Evans, David Goodwick, Joshua Swetts and Paul Tofincho, all of

Newtown -- has released its first album, called , and will be celebrating this

fact Friday, January 22, at The Fireside Inn in Newtown. Doors open at 7:30,

and all ages are welcome to the event.

In addition to a set or two by the host band, a few younger bands in Newtown

will also be performing that night. Playback will be giving away copies of its

CD as door prizes during the night.

There will be light refreshments included in the price of admission ($5 per

person); a cash bar will be available as well. Tickets are available at a

number of Newtown locations, including C.H. Booth Library, Newtown Youth

Services, Drug Center Pharmacy and Newtown Savings Bank offices, as well as at

the door that night.

For those of you coveting the return of all things 70s, The Warner Theatre in

Torrington has a concert for you! THREE DOG NIGHT ("Joy To The World," "One,"

"An Old-Fashioned Love Song," et al) will be performing a concert on Friday,

February 5. Opening will be THE SHANGRI-LAS ("Leader of the Pack").

Three Dog Night's current lineup includes founding members Cory Wells and

Danny Hutton on lead vocals and original keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon and

Michael Allsup on lead guitar. Bassist Paul Kingery and drummer Patrick Bautz

continue to tour with the band as well, having joined up in 1981 after TDG

took a six-year hiatus. Showtime is 8 pm; call the theatre, 860/489-7180, for

ticket reservations or additional information.

Tickets are all sold out for the January 9 LIVINGSTON TAYLOR concert at Towne

Crier Cafe in Pawling, so a second show has been added. Taylor will return the

following night. Michael Jerling opens the Sunday night show. Call the Crier

directly for tickets, 914/855-1300. Upcoming shows also include THE NIELDS,

January 15; a special solo performance by MERLE SAUNDERS, January 19, with The

Reich Project opening; LUTHER "GUITAR JUNIOR" JOHNSON & THE MAGIC ROCKERS,

January 30; and JONATHAN EDWARDS, February 6.

Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road.
