WORKS BY ELDERFIELD & JUSTICE AT CUE ART FOUNDATION UNTIL JUNE 2

Set 4-23; AK; #697233

NEW YORK CITY — Cue Art Foundation is showing works by two artists through June 2. Photographs by Jonathan Elderfield, curated by W.S. Di Piero, will feature approximately 16, 16-by-20-inch gelatin silver prints selected for his “Only Chicago” body of work, which has never before been exhibited or published. Jasmine Justice’s work, curated by David Reed, reveals her bold and evocative use of color, line and form similar to that found in the mesmerizing patterns adorning ornate mosques, Hindu temples and other densely patterned surfaces.

Taken over a period of more than two years, Elderfield’s recent investigations of city life signal the artist’s ongoing interest with seeking out and defining random moments that often remain overlooked. Elderfield began documenting urban culture while living in New York and continued to explore the subject with projects on Philadelphia and Chicago. Two examples from the artist’s earlier work will also be on view.

Born in Winchester, England, in 1967, Elderfield documented the South Philadelphia neighborhood where he lived in Living Under South Street, published in 2003 by Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg, Germany.

Justice’s palette, derived largely from popular culture references, such as advertising, textile design and children’s book illustrations, serves as the initial inspiration for the artist’s process. Setting the emotional tone of her paintings, color serves to reflect a specific feeling or inspiration. Her paintings contain spaces that function, correspond and communicate life parts of the body.

Justice was born in 1972 in West Virginia; she received a BFA in printmaking from the University of Washington in 1997 and an MFA from Rutgers University in New Jersey in 2003.

Her 2007 show at CUE, 511 West 25th Street, marks her first solo exhibition. For information, 212-206-3583 or www.cueaftfoundation.org.
