Three Newtown Teachers Cited For Excellence
The Connecticut State Department of Education recognized 109 teachers with
Celebration of Excellence awards Thursday, September 26 in a ceremony at the
Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury.
Three of those educators who were given awards for creative and effective
classroom projects were Newtown teachers Lorrie Arsenian, Anne Burke and Karen
Martin.
Ms Burke and Ms Martin had worked together at Sandy Hook Elementary School to
develop a classroom project titled, "Growing Together: Harvesting A Garden."
Ms Arsenian, of Newtown Middle School, had developed a "Kids And Media
Communications" unit for her students.
The Celebration of Excellence Program is administered by the State Department
of Education and is funded by the William Casper Graustein Memorial
Fund/Connecticut Center for School Change, SNET, the Connecticut Education
Association, The Connecticut State Federation of Teachers and the State of
Connecticut.
Now in its eleventh year, the program has honored 1,125 teachers and has
recognized 770 projects.
The award-winning learning projects are published and made available to
classroom teachers statewide.
