SNAPSHOT: Joseph (Jay) Maher

Occupation: I am a partner of J & J Pool and Concrete Service. We are a family

owned business that has operated for 14 years.

Residence: I am a life-long resident -- 37 years -- of Newtown and have lived

at 9 Glover Avenue for nine years.

Biggest Change In Town: Newtown has transformed from an agricultural town to a

suburb. I am proud that despite this growth and its many demands, the charm

and heritage of the Borough has been preserved. This has been possible through

the efforts of many dedicated people who get little recognition.

Family: My wife, Maureen, and I met at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

We have been married for 11 years. We have three children, Michael, 8, Sean,

5, and Emily, 2.

Pets: We have a dog, a Bichon Frise, named Kellie.

Hobbies: I enjoy snow skiing. I am a big New York Yankees and Knicks fan. I go

to Yankees games a couple times in the season and always attend opening day. I

love taking naps in my hammock on the weekends.

Favorite vacation spot: Cancun, Mexico. We go with other adults and enjoy

diving and other things there.

Organizations: I am currently a burgess of the Borough of Newtown. For the

past two years, I have co-chaired a committee studying the feasibility of

sidewalks in the center of our town. In June, the Legislative Council approved

the allocation of funds for an engineering study on the project. This is the

first step towards our vision of a safe, attractive means for all of us to

enjoy our town. What motivated me is the addition to the library and the fact

that the kids don't have a safe way to walk to it after school.

Philosophy: Be an optimist. Maintain a positive attitude and a healthy respect

for others. Take time to reflect on the good things in your life and strive to

change the bad.
