Meeting House Springs To Life With SCAN Show

(with photos)

"It's a lot of work, but it's fun."

So were the sentiments of Society of Creative Arts of Newtown, Inc, spring

show chairman Deborah Dargaty last Friday evening, minutes after handing out

twenty certificates for various categories to winners of this year's SCAN

Spring Show. After weeks of detailed planning, Ms Dargaty and officers,

committee members and leaders, directors and members of SCAN were joining the

public in viewing the over 150 varied works of art presented.

This year's was the 26th annual spring show hosted by the Newtown-based

artists' group (SCAN membership and shows are open to artists throughout the

area, not just residents of Newtown).

The spring presentation, which continued at the Newtown Meeting House the

weekend of May 18-19, was a winner before it even opened to the public during

Friday's reception. A total of 121 entries were received, representing seventy

artists throughout the area. Artists were allowed to enter one or two works

each.

According to Ruth Newquist, chairman of the show's program and publicity, the

spring show was "very good."

"We've had good shows all along," Mrs Newquist said, "but we didn't have to

reject any works this time, the work was that good." Early this week, the wife

of SCAN co-founder Larry Newquist was still excited over the quality of last

weekend's show.

"We hung the show [Thursday, May 16], and then we spent twenty minutes just

admiring it," continued Mrs Newquist. During Friday's party, a number of the

artworks were already wearing discreet stickers indicating they had been sold.

Awards were decided by three judges Friday morning, hours before the opening

reception. Ms Dargaty, who also announced this would be the last year she

would serve as show chairman, presented the awards later that evening.
