Christmas Comes To Sandy Hook

B Y K AAREN V ALENTA

Santa came to Sandy Hook last Friday night. He was met by a brass band and

dozens of excited children and their parents who braved the rapidly plunging

temperature to attend the annual tree lighting ceremony in the center.

Luminaria lined the sidewalks approaching the intersection of Church Hill

Road, Washington Avenue, Glen Road and Riverside Road, lighting the way for

Santa, who arrived at 7 pm on a Sandy Hook firetruck. As the high school

musicians played carols, Santa threw the switch to turn on the old-fashioned

multi-colored lights on the Christmas tree in the tiny pocket park alongside

the Pootatuck River.

Santa then led the crowd across Washington Avenue, stopping traffic until the

last child had safety crossed, and up the hill into the Masonic Temple where

Hiram Lodge #18 provided hot cocoa, coffee and cake for everyone.
