ON THE ROAD/SHANNON HICKS

JOHN GORKA is celebrating the release of his seventh album, After Yesterday,

with a tour that includes a stop at Newtown's Edmond Town Hall next week. This

is a WPKN-sponsored (89.5 FM) event, which, although it was announced was

coming during last November's GREG BROWN performance at the same venue, seems

to have snuck up quickly nevertheless. Tickets ($15) for Gorka's show --

Thursday, February 4 -- are available at the customer service desk at Grand

Union in Newtown. Showtime is 8 pm, and there's no opener.

Speaking of all things musical and Newtown, PETER OBRE brings his music back

to the pub at Mary Hawley Inn during February. Peter, who usually performs

during the inn's brunch, will be performing evening shows on February 5, 12,

14 and 26. Jazz band BLUE returns February 13.

Finally returning to our area next month will be THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES,

at the Pitt Center at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield on February 26.

While ticket sales may not get as crazy as last Thursday's frenzy at

UConn/Storrs for the February 6 DAVE MATTHEWS BAND show, the concert should

still be an excellent one. The Bosstones never disappoint with their live

shows.

Speaking of all things Dave Matthews, apparently both of the shows in the

state next month are for the band's current college campus tour only. The show

at UConn is the band's second Connecticut in as many days. A concert on

February 5 at the SNET Oakdale in Wallingford was set up by Quinnipiac College

in Hamden, and also sold out immediately when it went on sale to students. The

colleges can get away with this kind of non-public ticket availability because

it is the student funds of each respective school that is paying to have

Matthews come in to the state in the first place. Oh well... there is always

the summer tours to look forward to, and Matthews has played at the Meadows

Music Theatre in Hartford every year since it opened. There's no reason to

think he won't be back, for the public, in a few months.

A benefit concert is scheduled this weekend for Clark Farm-CSA, a community

supported farm in Woodbury. The show will include performances by TRIPLE

THREAT BLUES BAND, FRO, and a third performer to be announced. Tickets are $10

in advance, or $12 at the door. The show will WCSU's Ives Concert Hall, 181

White Street in Danbury. Details, contact the farm at 263-5801 or 888-6164.

Snow date, if necessary, is the following night.

Mardi Gras starts a bit early this year at Fairfield University's Quick

Center. DR JOHN returns to Connecticut for a performance on Saturday, February

6. The 8 pm performance will be followed by a party in the Quick Center's

lobby. Sounds like the makings of a great evening. Tickets are $30 and $35

each, and can be reserved by calling 254-4010.

Parade Day in New Haven is Sunday, March 14 this year. THE TIPPERARY KNIGHTS

return for the annual party that is highlighted by all the green beer and

corned beef you can stand. The Knights will be at Toad's Place for an early

afternoon show, immediately following the annual New Haven St Patrick's Day

Parade.

Sunday night, SEBADOH will be on stage for an all ages show. BETTER THAN EZRA

returns on Tuesday, March 16, also for an all ages event. On St Patrick's Day

Wednesday, the entertainment will be from THE CLANCY BROTHERS.

Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road.

that works, give me a call! Phone number at the office is 426-3141. Shows

listed on the calendar at club locations are for ages 21 and over unless

specified.
