Wine Wisdom-

Cold Weather Means Red Wine Time!

By Steve Small

It is really cold outside. In this kind of weather, I crave a nice full-bodied

glass of red wine. Somehow, a hearty red wine is especially soothing when you

have just experienced another bitterly cold day.

Petite Sirah is a grape grown in California that makes dark, hearty and

slightly tannic red wines. It is not particularly popular or well known, but

it can make a delicious red wine in the right hands. Wineries like Foppiano,

Parducci, Ridge and Concannon have all been making good Petite Sirahs for

years. The wines generally sell for between $8 to $15 a bottle. Petite Sirah

will warm you by the fire on a nasty day and also go nicely with a big bowl of

beef stew.

Cabernet Sauvignon is a much more popular grape than Petite Sirah. It is grown

in almost every significant wine-making country in the world. However, it can

be made in many different styles. There are light and fruity cabernets, as

well as the full-bodied, hearty ones I am discussing today. From California,

some of the better Cabernets on a cold winter day include Gallo Sonoma,

Chateau Souverain and Keeble. These wines all sell for around $10 a bottle.

Australian Cabernets from Seppelt, Brown Bros. and Wolf Blass are also

terrific when the weather dictates you stay inside.

Many French red Bordeaux are made up of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines

range in price from $6 to hundreds of dollars a bottle. There are also

hundreds of red Bordeaux available. Your friendly neighborhood wine merchant

should be able to suggest a good Bordeaux to sip while you watch the snow

flurries.

There are two additional wines I have been enjoying that do not really fit

into any category. The first is the Conde de Valdemar Rioja Riserva from

Spain. This wine is full-bodied, oaky and dry. The Conde de Valdemar also

seems to have loads of aging potential. It should continue to open up and

develop for many years to come. Another delicious red is the Monti

Montepulciano D'Abruzzo from Italy. The Monti has a richness and flavor that

is rarely found in a wine that sells for under $10.

A good bottle of red wine is the perfect remedy to another dreary winter day.

So as you scrape the windshield, shovel the walk or shiver at the bus stop,

don't let it get you down. Remember, there is a tasty glass of red wine

waiting for you at the end of the day.
