Cashman Resigns From ZBA

Alton W. Cashman, the longtime head of the town's Zoning Board of Appeals

(ZBA) has submitted his resignation from the panel to the town.

"It is with a great deal of regret that I forward to you my letter of

resignation from the Zoning Board of Appeals...," Mr Cashman wrote in a letter

to Town Clerk Cynthia Curtis.

"During my tenure of 17 years, I have thoroughly enjoyed my participation in

the activities, deliberations and decisions of the ZBA. This experience has

indeed been both an education and a challenge for me and one that I will look

back on with a great deal of pride and satisfaction. It has been an honor for

me to have served our community in this capacity since 1978," he writes.

In his letter of resignation, Mr Cashman lauds the work of Jean St. Jean, the

ZBA's administrator; Paul Pollock, the ZBA's legal counsel; and the membership

of the ZBA.

Ms St Jean said of Mr Cashman "Al Cashman was a wonderful chairman of the ZBA.

He treated all applicants fairly, courteously and with an open mind. He also

was always very conscientious regarding his responsibilities as chairman."

She added "I feel that I have been very fortunate to have worked for two

capable chairman during the many years that I have been here, Jim Smith in the

early 1970's and Al from 1978 to the present. Both men have been an asset to

not only the commission but to the town as well. Newtown is very lucky to have

people of such caliber serve as volunteers."

Mr Cashman serves as an assistant principal at Newtown Middle School.
