Public Safety Panel Meetings Moved Out Of Garner

The Newtown Public Safety Committee is scheduled to meet at 5 pm Tuesday,

March 10, in the conference room at Town Hall South, 3 Main Street.

Until now, that committee has met in the warden's conference room at Garner

Correctional Institution, 50 Nunnawauk Road.

However, some town representatives on the ad hoc panel have repeatedly

complained they fear for their safety when meeting at the state's

high-security prison which opened in November 1992.

First Selectman Herb Rosenthal has decided to hold the quarterly public safety

meetings somewhere other than Garner. The last session was held October 20 at

Garner.

Each town which contains state correctional institutions has a public safety

committee to address prison-related public safety issues.

The conference room at Town Hall South has had relatively little use since

town offices moved from that building to Canaan House at Fairfield Hills in

February 1997.
