Nutmeg Games

26 Locals Entered

HAMDEN - From fencing to field hockey and tennis to taekwondo, thousands of

athletes are descending upon Hamden and surrounding towns this week to compete

in the annual Nutmeg Games.

Area athletes as young as eight and as old as 53 will be competing in the

games, hosted, this year, by Quinnipiac College with the town of Hamden and

the Cheshire Academy.

More than 6,000 athletes are expected to participate in the nearly 30 events

offered. Competition began last week in swimming and will conclude next

Tuesday with the Nutmeg Bowl, an All-Star football game at Southern

Connecticut State University in New Haven which will spotlight some of the

state's finest senior players.

That game will be held Tuesday, August 1, with kickoff at 7:30 pm.

The following are the two dozen Newtown athletes competing in the Nutmeg

Games: l  Baseball - Benjamin Bianco, 14; Ronald Bianco, 15, Matthew

Bouteiller, 15; Larry Isler, 13; Mike Kascak, 15; Kyle McCullough, 13; Shawn

McLean, 15; Rob Nute, 15; Jeff Rucktenwald, 13; and Ken Seferi, 13.

l  Basketball - Eric Bertrand, 22; Allison Pond, 11.

l  Cycling - Jack Hornak, 45.

l  Golf - William Brookes, 56; David Brookes, 21; Stephen Brookes, 15; David

Hufner, 21.

l  Gymnastics - Kristen Landolfi, 9.

l  Ice Hockey - Micheal Leone, 8; Tim McKenney, 7; Martin Schurr, 9; Michael

Schurr, 8.

l  Soccer - Trey Hoppmeyer, 12; Harris Towne, 17.

l  Track - Russ Bennett, 18.

l  Volleyball - Kristin Denninger, 16; Leigh Hoppmeyer, 16.
