Diocese Continues Efforts Create Clergy Retreat At Gretsch Property
The Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport continues its efforts to transform the
former Gretsch property into a retreat for its clergy.
The church purchased the 136-acre property on Castle Hill Road from the
Gretsch family in 1995 for $2.5 million. The site's large red mansion sits on
one of the highest points in Newtown and can be seen from several points
throughout town.
Newtown architect John Madzula is working to redesign the house to be used as
a retreat home for clergy. The church is also seeking to convert an existing
house barn on the property into a meeting facility and chapel.
Bernie Reidy, the diocese's chief financial officer, said the church will
eventually approach the borough's land-use boards with its plans.
The private property can be accessed from Castle Hill Road or Mount Pleasant
Road.
The church may eventually use part of the property for a cemetery, which would
be located on the Route 6 side near Johnny Cake Lane.
Recently, workers removed the roof of the old pump house on the shores of
Taunton Lake. The church's insurance company felt the deteriorated roof might
cause a liability.
