Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*AARP INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE available on Mondays only through April 9, 9 am to noon by appointment only. Bring last year’s tax return and any other pertinent information. Call 270-4310 to set up an appointment.

*Join us on March 27, at 1 pm, to find “4 WAYS TO SAVE” with Scott McDonald, a certified financial advisor with New York Life. Call to sign up.

*BINGO on March 28

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*On Tuesday at 10:30 am make CARDS FOR THE TROOPS serving overseas.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

*CRAFT CLASS on Thursday, April 5, at 1 pm, make a floral arrangement for the Easter dinner table.

*ANTIQUE ROAD SHOW produced by Harrison Galleries will take place on April 10, at 1 pm. Limit one item  per person.

Day Trips

*LARRY GATLIN and the GATLIN BROTHERS at the Mohegan Sun on Wednesday, April 11. A buffet lunch is included. Depart the Senior Center at 8 am; cost is $69 per person.

*MADAMA BUTTERFLY will be presented by the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center on Sunday, April 22. Butterfly is sung in Italian with English supertitles. Lunch is included at Les Sans Sulottes. Departure is at 8:30 am. Cost is $160 per person. Final payment is due.

ITALIAN FEST at Mount Haven Resort, in the foothills of the Poconos, only an hour and a half by bus. Complete breakfast and dinner buffets. Cost per person is $66.

Overnight Trips

*FUTURE TRIPS include a 3-day trip to Pennsylvania Dutch countryside and visit the King Tut exhibit in Philadelphia, July 25–27; an 8-day tour of Scotland, August 22–30; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise September 3–8. Trip booklets are available at the front desk.

Monday: March 26: Orange glazed chicken quarter, egg noodles, mixed vegetables, soft breadstick, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: March 27: Beef tips with mushroom gravy, parsley boiled potatoes, garden peas, whole wheat bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Beef and bean chili served over rice, French green beans, corn bread, fruit cocktail.

Thursday: Dave’s meatloaf with gravy, mashed potatoes, chopped spinach, dinner roll, grape juice, mandarin oranges.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: April 2: Chicken tenders, mashed potato with gravy, diced carrots, cornbread, butterscotch pudding with whipped topping.

Tuesday: April 3: Sheppard’s pie, tossed salad with tomato, ranch dressing, whole wheat bread, pineapple tidbits, cranberry juice.

Monday: AM AARP income tax assistance, pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Larry Ayce; Tai Chi & Chi Kung, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM Cards for the Troops, bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.
