HONORING THOSE WHO HONOR OLD GLORY w/ cut

Newtown Police Lt David Lydem was honored Tuesday for his many years of
service to the American flag by Newtown's American Legion Post 202 and its
Ladies Auxiliary.
Lt Lydem is the first recipient of the Legion's monthly Flag Appreciation
Award, which will recognize individuals, groups and businesses for their
efforts in honoring the American flag by displaying it properly. Lt Lydem
supervises the display, care and handling of the flag on Newtown's famous Main
Street flagpole.
"Dave has done a great job of displaying the flag at the flagpole over the
years, and what better flag to focus on for our first award?" said Legion
Commander Tim Powell at Tuesday's brief ceremony at police headquarters.
Lt Lydem said he has been putting up and taking down the American flag on Main
Street for the past 29 years, and regularly since 1983. He said he has
received plenty of help over the years, especially from the Newtown Hook &
Ladder Fire Company, which assists with its aerial ladder truck every time the
flag is changed.
"They've been a tremendous asset," Lt Lydem noted.
The flag used to get stolen on a regular basis, but after several attempts to
foil the would-be bandits, Lt Lydem rigged a system that keeps the ropes out
of their reach.
During the winter, Lt Lydem raises a 12 by 18-foot flag, and in the summer, he
puts up a 20 by 30-foot flag.
"When it starts to tatter I try to get up there and change it pretty quick,"
he said.
The Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) of Newtown donated the first ever large flag
to fly over Main Street, according to the lieutenant.
