Easter Basket Appeal

The organizers of the second annual Easter Basket Project to assist needy
families in Newtown are seeking donations from residents and businesses.
The project, which was established last year by Judy and Scott Grillo, is
being coordinated this year by local Girl Scout troops, Women Involved in
Newtown (WIN), the Newtown Junior Woman's Club, and the town's social services
department.
The names of recipients are confidential. However, Human Services Director
Karen Hoyt has provided information about the ages of children in each family
so that appropriate gifts can be included in the baskets. The families have
been "adopted" by the scout troops, which will provide non-perishable food
items for the baskets. The baskets also will include toys and candy.
The organizers are seeking donations of gift certificates to local grocery
stores. The gift certificates are available in denominations of $5 and up at
the Grand Union, Super Stop & Shop, and Big Y, and would be used to purchase
such perishable items as meat, milk, fresh fruit, and vegetables.
"We'd like to put $30 worth of gift certificates in each basket," Ms Hoyt
said. She said the recipient families will use the gift certificates to
purchase perishables of their own choice.
Forty baskets will be assembled, more than half of which will be distributed
in Newtown. Extra baskets will be sent to the Danbury Regional Commission on
Child Care Rights and Abuse for distribution.
Donations of gift certificates should be mailed to the Department of Human
Services, Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street, Newtown 06470, in time for the
baskets to be assembled and distributed on April 4 from the Multi-Purpose
Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. For more information, contact Ms
Hoyt at 270-4330.
