Council Members Get A First-Hand Look At School Conditions
Four members of the Legislative Council toured both Newtown High School and
Hawley School last Saturday morning to get a close look at just how badly
renovations at the two school are needed.
With Principal Linda Siciliano as their guide at Hawley School and NHS
Assistant Principal Jules Triber leading them around the high school, council
members Joseph Borst, William Brimmer, Gail Halapin and John Kortze saw
first-hand why both schools so desperately need to add on.
School officials have proposed a $28.5 million addition to the high school and
a $3.5 million expansion at Hawley.
"I thought it was a tour well worth it. I wish everyone could go on it,"
explained Mrs Halapin. "It really shows the need at the high school, not only
for space, but for other things, as well."
Mrs Halapin said she was concerned about poor air circulation in the science
labs, was shocked with how overcrowded the library was, and, though not a
sports fan, sympathized with the school's need for a track.
Mr Triber said the council seemed supportive of the high school's plight, but
was unsure how the taxpayers will react.
"I think they're concerned about how the town will respond," explained Mr
Triber. "To be honest, we need this addition here. Things are pretty crowded
here and it's tough on the kids."
A town meeting has been tentatively scheduled for May 28. If a referendum is
petitioned, the machine vote would likely takes place June 18.
