To the Editor:
Please join me in supporting Andrew Buzzi for Board of Education. With tough budgetary times ahead, Newtownâs Board of Education needs strong leadership with a commitment to balancing educational excellence with fiscal responsibility. Andrew Buzzi is a proven leader who is the right man for the job.
Andy and I have served together on Newtownâs Public Building and Site Committee for almost five years, managing the design and construction of the new Reed Intermediate School. For the majority of that time, Andy was the chairman of the committee, providing strong leadership as the construction of the school progressed. That $30 million construction project is just about complete, the school opened on time and on budget. I can tell you this, Andy is a terrific leader who can cut right to the heart of an issue and ask the tough questions in the face of tough challenges. But Andy is more then a great leader, for me he has been a great mentor, helping me to grow professionally into the role and assume the important responsibilities of chairman of the building committee in his succession.Â
Andy Buzzi left the building committee last spring to an appointed position on the school board, a place where his leadership skills are greatly needed. As a school board member, Andy has been a key player; just ask any of the parents that regularly attend the meetings. He was instrumental in negotiating a settlement with the teachers that both parties could live with and he fought to stop the use of a new history book that taught politically correct ârevisionist historyâ (thatâs when the author attempts to rewrite history in a politically correct way).
Like me, Andy is committed to educational excellence, but balanced with fiscal responsibility. We need to continue to invest in Newtownâs educational system, be we need to do it at a level and a pace that our electorate can afford. We need Andyâs voice on the school board now more then ever. I hope you will join me in supporting him in the November election.
Sincerely,
Bill Furrier
