Health District Looks At Well Water Testing Program
The local health district is developing a systematic program for testing well
water when homes are built or sold.
The program would be in conjunction with a proposed state regulation which
would require that water in a private well be tested within three months of
the sale of the house. Water already is tested in new homes before a
certificate of occupancy is granted.
"The problem with new homes is that the water test may test okay but a couple
months later the homeowner sometimes complains that the water doesn't seem to
be good," said Mark A.R. Cooper, director of the Newtown District Department
of Health. "When the water is tested again, this sample seems entirely
different. Has the water changed or was the first sample not drawn from the
same well?"
Mr Cooper said that instead of allowing developers to draw the water samples,
as is done in Newtown, the nearby Pomperaug Health District contracts with
private laboratories to collect and test the samples.
"This costs no more than if a homeowner collected a sample and had it tested,"
Mr Cooper said. "I am sure we could make arrangements with several labs to
provide the service at a fixed price."
Once such a contract is in place, residents also could periodically have their
own well water tested, as is recommended by health officials.
Mr Cooper said that once he has worked out the details of the program, he will
bring it to the health district board for its approval.
