Italian Triptych Stars At Paine Auction

DEDHAM, MASS. -- An estates auction by Stanley J. Paine at the Dedham Holiday
Inn on January 28 competed wth three other sales in the area on the same
night. The 350 lots from Newton, Wellesley, and Winchester homes were offered
to an audience of 150, following a three-hour preview.
Heading the auction was a Nineteenth Century Italian handpainted triptych
Linaiuoli tabernacle, the center panel featuring a seated Madonna with Child,
bringing $2,700. The lot was purchased by a dealer in the audience, raising a
left bid for $2,600.
A Frank Smith sterling silver four-piece tea service on a sterling tray,
weighing 151 troy ounces, sold to a dealer at $2,000; an antique flintlock
coach blunderbuss went to a collector at $450; a Husbach "Koppelsdorf" cloth
doll with porcelain head, approximately 13 inches high, fetched $300; and a
110-piece Coalport dinner service was purchased by a dealer at $650.
A 20-piece handpainted Sevres tea set reached $425. Several pieces of Henriot
Quimper brought: $85 for a covered sugar and creamer; $115 for a serving
platter; and $175 for a covered casserole. A French handmade Nineteenth
Century tapestry, 8'10" by 7'7", depicting a man and woman in majestic period
dress with a castle in the background, went to a dealer at $600.
A Governor Winthrop mahogany two-part glazed door secretary desk with broken
arch top and elegantly fitted interior achieved $900; a three-piece brass
girandole set with many hanging crystals sold at $350; a pair of Nineteenth
Century bronze Marly horses after Guillaume Coustou fetched $2,600, going to a
dealer; and a woman's ring, set with an old mine cut diamond weighing .70
carats, rang up $650. A collection of signed Lalique averaged $125 each.
Prices quoted do not reflect the 10 percent buyer's premium.
