New Attendance Policy May Keep Some Seniors From Graduating
The effects of this year's new attendance policy at Newtown High School are
now being felt by some seniors.
With next Thursday's graduation looming, NHS administrators report that a
handful of students may fall short of their graduation requirements due to
poor attendance.
According to Assistant Principal Jules Triber, the new NHS attendance policy
states that if a student misses more than 20 classes in a year-long course, or
more than 10 in a semester-long course, he or she will not receive course
credit. Mr Triber said the student can still pass the course, but when it
comes time to graduate, earning the credit is just as important as getting a
passing grade.
According to Mr Triber, the policy was implemented following a recommendation
from the Campus Improvement Team (CIT), which was seeking to encourage better
attendance.
Assistant Principal Marilyn Capizzano said those students in jeopardy of
missing graduation due to poor attendance are slated to go before the school's
appeals board Monday.
