Snapshot: Eugene Marks
Date: Fri 30-Oct-1998
Occupation: I was a physician for 56 years. I am now semi-retired. I do consulting work for the state Bureau of Rehabilitation Services and for occupational medical services for small industry. I like consulting. I spent most of my life in occupational medicine. I worked for Dupont Corporation as its medical director for Remington Arms in Bridgeport.
Residence: I have lived in Newtown for 30 years as of August.
Biggest change seen in town: Everybody says it's grown, but I haven't really noticed that. There are more people I don't know so it must be. Certainly traffic has increased.
Family: My wife, Edna, is a retired art teacher from the Middle School. Her retirement lasted about six weeks. Now she works at J.C. Penney. We have six children, Jim, Catherine, Joanne, Judy, Elizabeth and Ed, and 18 grandchildren.
My son Jim is a physician. He works at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. He and his wife, Judith, have two children, Amy and Adam. Catherine and her husband, Louis Scott, have two daughters, Samantha and Cassandra. She is an attorney in Syracuse, N.Y. Joanne and her husband, Jerry Shpunt, have three children, Jeff, and twins Scott and Stacy. Joanne lives in Newtown and works for Dr Gellert. Judy, Joanne's twin, lives in Virginia and is a reading specialist in a school. She and her husband, William Freitag, have two children, Amanda and Brian. Elizabeth lives in Darien, and is a former assistant controller at Alexander's. She and her husband, Richard Cortright, have four children, Emily and Maggie and identical twins Matthew and Michael. Ed lives in Newtown and is a banker. He and his wife, Tamara, have five children, Stephen, Christopher, Jason, Brandon and Ashley.
Pets: We have two dogs, mini-Dachshunds, named Laverne and Shirley, and a cat called Smokey.
Hobbies: I walk three to four miles three or four times a week for exercise and enjoyment. I play volleyball when the family gets together. I also collect old piano rolls.
Books: I like to read, mostly mysteries. My favorite author is Dick Francis. I read him more consistently than anyone else. I also like books by Tom Clancey.
Organizations: I have been singing in the Congregational Church choir for many years. I am chairman of the Commission on Aging and am a member of several professional organizations.
Philosophy: I try to live by the philosophy of, "Don't sweat the small stuff, and it's all the small stuff."
