Newtown Connects Fairfield Hills Water Supply To Aquarion, Ending Water Restrictions
Aquarion Water Company announced the successful connection of Aquarion’s system to the Fairfield Hills water supply on September 10. This officially lifts the ban on non-essential outdoor water use that has been in place since the August 2024 flood, and allows for a move to two day per week watering.
That storm flooded Aquarion’s well field off South Main Street in Botsford, taking two critical wells offline and forcing residents and businesses to operate under water restrictions for more than a year. The new connection restores capacity and provides the stability needed across town.
First Selectman Jeff Capeci said this project took thoughtful planning and strong collaboration.
He specifically thanked Public Works Director Fred Hurley, Robert Ulrich of Aquarion Water Company, and Tim Clark of the Potatuck Club, owner of the land upon which the Town-owned Fairfield Hills wells are located, for their partnership and persistence in “making this solution a reality.”
“Together, we have delivered an outcome that benefits our entire community,” Capeci said.
The new connection ensures Aquarion can honor will-serve letters for development that had been approved but put on hold due to the water shortage. This is particularly welcome news for Sandy Hook and other neighborhoods where projects were delayed.
“This is a win for Newtown,” Capeci said. “It strengthens our water system, supports economic development, and removes limitations that residents and businesses have endured since last summer’s flood. Most importantly, it gives our community the confidence to move forward.”
While this interconnection is intended for emergency use only and is not a permanent solution, the Town of Newtown and impacted parties continue to negotiate with the railroad company to resolve the blockage of the Pootatuck River caused by a culvert collapse.
The Town of Newtown, Aquarion Water Company, and local partners will continue to monitor the water system to ensure long-term stability and reliable service for all residents.
