The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will host Bivenne Staiger demonstrating watercolor on Wednesday, October 22, at 1:30 pm, in the lower level meeting space at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at The Flagpole).

The demonstration is open to the public and admission is free.

An author, instructor and book illustrator, Staiger’s journey as an artist began and continues with generous exposure to all the arts, particularly drawing and painting, architecture, textiles, and garden design.

Color, line, value, and shape are integral to designs she creates in many different visual media: oil and pastel, beadwork and embroidery, scraperboards, collage, and more. Known primarily for her work in watercolor, however, she creates impact in her vibrant wildlife and floral paintings through large scale imagery, bright colors, and high value contrast.

A Signature Member of American Watercolor Society and many other arts organizations, Staiger is the recipient of many prestigious awards for her work in watercolor, including the Silver Medal from American Watercolor Society’s 152nd Annual Exhibition (2019), work which was also selected as part of its Travel Exhibition. She was a featured artist in Watercolor Artist magazine’s January/February 2020 issue, is the author of White! Light! Bright! How to Make Your Backgrounds Support and Enhance Your Watercolor Paintings (2022, Schiffer Publishing), and writes a blog on her painting techniques (bivennesartblog.wordpress.com).

The illustrator of the children’s book I Love You as Much As… by Sarah Caratasios (2024), Staiger also offers classes, workshops, and demonstrations in watercolor throughout the southern New England region and has for decades been sharing her particular love for watercolor.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs but additional information may be found at SCANart.org.

“Red Charm” is an 11 by 15 inch watercolor by Bivenne Staiger, who plans to offer an artist demonstration at Newtown Meeting House this month.
