One person died last night after being struck by a vehicle on Hawleyville Road. The initial investigation indicates the person, who has been identified as Valdemir Santana, 62, of Danbury, was struck by a vehicle they had been operating.
Newtown Police Department, Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and a paramedic all responded around 6:15 pm Thursday, November 6, to Hawleyville Road near Old Hawleyville Road for a reported vehicle vs pedestrian motor vehicle accident.
Upon arrival, first responders located bystanders who had already begun performing life saving measures on Mr Santana, who was in the northbound shoulder of Hawleyville Road.
The Newtown Police Department Detective Division and Accident Reconstruction Team also responded to the scene to investigate. Hawleyville Road was closed for hours while the on-scene investigation was conducted.
The preliminary investigation determined Mr Santana was alone, operating a commercial motor vehicle and towing construction equipment northbound on Hawleyville Road, when he stopped and exited the vehicle on the northbound shoulder of that road.
The vehicle and trailer then started rolling forward. It struck and caused fatal injuries to Mr Santana before coming to a stop near the Exit 9 Commuter Lot.
In a statement, Newtown PD says at this time, there is no reason to believe any other vehicles were involved in this accident.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841, reference Case #2500016181.
