Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue firefighters clear debris off Riverside Road after the 2018 Toyota Corolla in the foreground crashed early Sunday, November 23. Sandy Hook VFR, Newtown Hook & Ladder, Newtown Police, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and a paramedic were all dispatched around 2 am to the area of 1 Riverside Road for the reported one-vehicle rollover with entrapment. Newtown PD officers were first to arrive on scene and reported the driver was out of the vehicle. Hook & Ladder was canceled at that time. Newtown Police report Tariq L. Turner, 27, of Hartford, was operating the Toyota eastbound on Church Hill Road, then continued east onto Riverside. The vehicle went off the road’s southern shoulder and collided with and destroyed a lamp post, clipped the guy line of a utility pole, and clipped a stone wall before returning to the roadway, eventually ending up on its roof. Turner was transported to a hospital for suspected minor injuries. Riverside was closed between Sandy Hook Center and Apex Glass for approximately one hour, while firefighters and police officers continued to work the scene. Modz Towing and Eversource also responded to the crash. The case remains under investigation and enforcement action is pending, according to the police report. —Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue photo
