In September, C.H. Booth Library Director Jenn Nash invited Wallingford Public Library’s Reading Advisory Librarian Cindy Haiken to Newtown to present her infamous “Book Buzz” program. The aptly named event was an opportunity for Haiken, a self-proclaimed “bibliophile,” to discuss upcoming books that were generating “buzz” in literary spaces.

Haiken is set to return to Newtown on Monday, March 9, this time to present her spring-summer edition of Book Buzz. She plans to once again present her extensive research on soon-to-be published books and what they are about. Through her research, she compiles handouts with hundreds of titles across several genres.

Book Buzz attendees are encouraged to take notes, ask questions, and enjoy themselves. Dozens of guests filled Marygold’s on Main for Haiken’s first visit to town. Guests initially filled the Main Street venue’s tavern cocktail lounge for hors d’oeuvres and a drink before moving to the Gladiolus Room for the main event.

Haiken had prepared nine different pamphlets categorized by genre, covering books that were to release between early September and late February. Each featured several dozen books in order of release date. Every listing showed the book’s title, author, and cover, alongside a brief description. Between all nine pamphlets, Haiken compiled nearly 600 books for people to look forward to. She called the collection “a tiny little sliver of what’s actually coming out.”

Haiken had also compiled a list of 20 Notables — books that were particularly noteworthy, getting rave reviews, and were significant for one reason or another, she explained. That selection spanned genres, from self-help memoirs and short story collections to gripping thrillers and sci-fi dystopias.

In additional to helping local readers build their personal reading lists, proceeds from the event’s ticket sales benefited C.H. Booth Library.

The March event will be presented at Newtown Community Center, 8 Simpson Street, beginning at 6 pm. The program is for ages 21 and over.
