Housatonic Resource Recovery Authority (HRRA) has its next Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off event planned for Saturday, May 9, 9 am to 2 pm, at Newtown Public Works, 4 Turkey Hill Road.

Residents of all towns in the HRRA region — Newtown, Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Kent, New Fairfield, New Milford, Redding, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Sherman, Weston, and Wilton — are eligible to drop off permitted materials for disposal. The one-day event accepts items not allowed at local landfills and transfer stations.

The protocol for the event is as follows: Residents must always remain in their vehicle; items being dropped off are to be in the back of each vehicle prior to arrival (place before arriving at Public Works, not at the site); windows are to be rolled up; and drivers need to be ready to place their driver’s license against their window for proof of residency.

Workers will remove the contents and will be in full safety gear.

Smoking will not be allowed on site.

Fuel containers will not be poured out and returned.

Wait times may vary from five to 30 minutes depending on volume of traffic.

HRRA reserves the right to inspect vehicles with excessive amounts of material. Large quantities are subject to fees.

Items accepted will include one-pound single use propane cylinders; aerosol cans (full or partially full); carburetor cleaners, brake fluids; cleaners for ovens, toilet bowls, and drains; cleaners for rugs and upholstery; dry cleaning solvents; engine degreasers; flea powder; hobby supplies; lighter fluids; mercury thermostats and thermometers; moth balls; and paints, paint thinners, and strippers.

Also pesticides, herbicides, insecticides (including lawn care products); photo chemicals, chemistry; polishes for furniture, floor, and metal; resins, rosins, and adhesives; rubber cement, airplane glue; septic tank degreasers; spot removers; stains and varnishes; swimming pool chemicals; transmission fluids, car waxes; vapes; waste fuels (kerosene, gasoline); and wood preservatives.

The following items will not be accepted on May 9: 20-pound propane tanks, auto batteries and tires, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil and antifreeze, and rechargeable batteries. HRRA suggests residents contact their hometown recycling center to see if any of the above will be accepted there.

The following can be put into the garbage: alkaline batteries, empty aerosol cans, and smoke detectors.

HRRA says the local police department should be contacted concerning the following: ammunition, explosives, and fireworks.

The following are also not accepted at HRRA Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off events: medical waste, PCB capacitors, pharmaceutic, controlled substances, pathological material, radioactive materials, and unknown gases. Contact HRRA for safe disposal options.

For additional information, including items that will not be accepted, visit hrra.org/household-hazardous-waste or contact HRRA, 203-775-4539 or info@hrra.org, for details or guidance.

For those who miss the Newtown collection event, the next HRRA Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 9 am to 2 pm, at Bethel High School.
