John was born on December 16, 1938, in Wilmington, Delaware, to the late Thomas E. Marshall and Margaret C. Marshall. He is survived by his daughters, Karen M. Poisson (Craig) of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and Kellie M. Brown of Southbury; his five grandchildren, Tyler, Ryan, Madison, Connor, and Elizabeth; and his brother, Peter C. Marshall (Jill). John was preceded in death by his sisters, Anne M. Brinsfield and Patricia E. Marshall.
John was a longtime educator who began his career at Friends School in Wilmington, Delaware. After moving to Connecticut, he dedicated more than 40 years to teaching in the Weston Public Schools, where he also coached several varsity sports. He took great pride in operating the Soaring Eagle Day Camp in Weston, positively impacting the lives of many children and families over the years.
John had a deep love for music and could often be found playing guitar and singing his favorite John Denver songs. He was also a talented artist, an avid gardener, and a lifelong sports enthusiast. He especially loved spending summers in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, relaxing on the deck with a cup of coffee and enjoying the coastal beauty he cherished so much.
Additionally, John was a devoted animal lover, with a particular affection for Old English Bulldogs.
John was a long time resident of Newtown, and spent the last ten years of his life at Maplewood Assisted Living in Bethel, a place he called home. During his time there, he formed many meaningful friendships with residents and caregivers alike, all of whom appreciated his bright smile and quick wit. He could often be found sitting in his favorite recliner with the door open, always welcoming visitors. He also treasured the many visits, outings, and special moments shared with his family throughout his years there.
