Runners, walkers, and fitness enthusiasts are all gearing up for the inaugural Newtown Community Running event, scheduled for Sunday, August 30, at Fairfield Hills.

Announced in April and hosted by Newtown Road Runners, the event will feature Newtown’s first ever half marathon.

The net proceeds will go to Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Association in honor of Greg Ritzinger, recognizing his service and dedication to the community. Ritzinger was an EMT and one of the original members of Newtown Road Runners.

Participants can choose from a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a free kid’s run. The event will also feature local vendors, making it a full day of celebration for the community.

Bruce Goulart, who is serving as race director, said he and other organizers “are thrilled to bring a half marathon to Newtown for a great cause.”

Cost to participate is $75 for half marathon runners/walkers, $55 for 10K runners/walkers, and $35 for 5K runners/walkers. Registration is open now at runsignup.com.

Volunteers Sought

Organizers are seeking businesses, organizations, and individuals to partner as event sponsors. Sponsorship opportunities may include logo placement on race shirts, website, and recognition in event promotions.

Volunteers are also needed for various help prior to and on the day of the event. Goulart visited Newtown Senior Center last week, when he introduced the new event and issued a call for volunteers.

“This is really meant to be a community-wide event for all ages,” he said May 12. “If you don’t walk or run, we have opportunities for everyone who would like to help.”

A volunteer meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, at 6 pm, at Newtown Teen Center, 53 Church Hill Road. All are invited to attend the meeting to learn about available opportunities.

The following week organizers will host an Angels Meeting. During that meeting organizers will discuss what an angel is. “It will be explanatory and informative,” Goulart said during his appearance at the senior center last week.

Those interested in sponsoring and/or volunteering should contact Goulart at 203-482-2529.
