Glorydays, March 8, 1996

This week in 1991

Maureen McGovern advanced to the indoor track New England Championships when

she placed fourth at State Opens in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:43.

McGovern also placed seventh at State Opens in the 1000 meters where she

turned in a time of 3:12.43. Newtown's Becky Young threw 29 feet in the shot

put, but did not place at Opens.

This week in 1986

The St Rose girls' basketball team finished its season with an 11-3 record

after beating St Peter's of Danbury, 40-22 in the regular season finale. The

team overcame a seven-point deficit thanks to Dara Zemo who finished with a

team-high 14 points. St Rose also got scoring from Lisa Wargo (8), Justin

Gaudiosi (7), Michelle Scoville (5), Patty Murren (4), and Susan Zemper (2).

Coach Jack McAuliffe was forced to play the game without starting players,

Cheryl Amaral, Mary K Morgan, and Justine Joy, all of whom had the flu.

This week in 1981

Coach Kevin O'Sullivan and the Newtown High School boys' basketball team

successfully defended their WCC Championship crown by beating Pomperaug 56-54

in the title game. Tournament MVP Randy Gunther scored the winning layup in

the game's final seconds and finished with 22 points, eleven of those coming

in the fourth quarter. Billy Wilkison scored 16 points and was named to the

All-Tournament team as well. Other NHS players who saw time in the finals were

Randy Below, Frank Bolander, Tim Leahy, and Rick Gepfer.

This week in 1976

Steve Gallo and Mike Whelan qualified for the indoor track state championships

with outstanding efforts in the Class M Sectionals. Gallo won the state title

in the 60 yard dash, breaking a school record with a time of 6.6 in the event.

Gallo also qualified for the state meet by finishing second in the long jump

with a leap of 19-11 1 / 2 . Whelan qualified with a 5-6 high jump. Newtown

athletes who did well, but did not advance, were Tony Reelick, Dan Coleman,

Roger Streeter, and Perry Esposito.

This week in 1971

The Newtown high School wrestling team completed its first-ever season with a

3-2 record. The Indians were coached by Bill Manfredonia and led on the mat by

Carl Berquist (4-0), Bill Ross (4-1), Mike Forcht (4-1), Pat Kearns (3-1),

Steve Gleason (3-1-1), Kevin Griffith (2-0), Tom Young (2-1), George Stowe

(2-1), Jack Whittle (3-2), Tom VanAlemo (3-2), Bob DeJoseph (1-3), Bob

DePersio (0-2), and Paul Riutta (0-5).

This week in 1966

Over 200 townspeople gathered at the Newtown High School cafeteria (on Queen

Street) to hear Superintendent of Schools, John Sommi, and Board of Education

Chairman, David Chipman, on the proposed building of a new high school at a

cost of $3,300,000. Chipman told the forum that the population in Newtown was

expected to rise to 17,000 by the year 1975. Sommi, in stressing the

importance of a good high school education, quoted figures that said a high

school graduate could expect to earn $247,000 in a lifetime and a college

grad, $385,000. " The rewards for a college education, " he said, " are nine

and a half times its cost. "

This week in 1961

The Newtown High School junior class defeated the seniors, 47-45 in the

championship game of the Interclass Basketball Tournament as Ronnie Beardsley

scored 16 points and Dave Stickles eleven to lead the way. The sophomores,

meanwhile, defeated the freshmen, 57-11 in the consolation game as Dan Lawler,

Ted Kamas, and Dan Dayton combined for 38 points. John Hartman had four points

for the freshmen.

This week in 1956

A new slate of officers was proposed to members of Newtown Country Club to

replace the five acting members whose terms had expired. Paul McNamara was

nominated for president, Fred Buermeyer for vice president, Virginia Mackro

for second vice president, Richard Winship for secretary, and Warren Abrams

for treasurer. The new group would replace the current board of George

Kaltenbach, Gould Curtis, Frank Hubbell, and Walter Campbell.

This week in 1951

Mrs Brian Mainwaring, of Mile Hill Road, captured the award for best hound

with her greyhound " Mouse " at the recent AKC sanctioned 39th Match Show of

the Newtown Kennel Club.
