SNAPSHOT FOR 7/25/97:
GARRY OBER
Occupation: Manager and co-owner, with his mother, Marilyn Burr Ober, of Burr
Farm Garden Center on South Obtuse Road in Brookfield
How long in Newtown: Moved into town in 1960; graduated Newtown High School,
Class of 1972 ("I can't believe it. My 25th reunion is coming up.")
I started out with a career in chemical engineering with Exxon, but when my
parents started the landscape business in 1978 (purchasing land that used to
be my grandfather's dairy farm), I left Exxon in 1980 and joined them in the
family business.
Biggest change in town: Obviously, it has to be the growth in Newtown over the
past few years. Like a lot of people, I do get alarmed with the change in
character that the town is undergoing - more suburban than rural.
But in the same breath, I have to say the people I've met have been the
nicest. I guess growth is natural and it comes with the usual growing pains.
Now, it's Newtown's turn.
Unfortunately, I see less civility in local politics than I used to.
And don't forget the $2 movie. That was a big change!
Family: My wife, Jennifer, is a nurse and a full-time Mom. I have three
daughters, Bethany, Mary Grace and Claire.
Pets: We've always had a "barn cat." The latest one is named Tag.
Hobbies: Reading. I try to read an hour a day, usually historical works and
anything I can find on Winston Churchill. I also like Jane Austen and Thomas
Hardy.
In winter, during my "slow time" [at the nursery], I like to keep up with
college basketball, especially at Duke where I was an undergraduate.
Personal philosophy: Trying to instill in my children the belief that to be
content, you need a life of simplicity. For our family, that means following
Biblical principles. We try to limit non-essential activities that take time
away from the family, such as television.
I really feel blessed to be working in a field that keeps me connected to the
land. There is a certain freedom I gain from that, and from trying to live
simply.
