ON THE ROAD/SHANNON HICKS

MTV's Campus Invasion Tour will be in Connecticut next month. Beginning

October 24 and continuing for about five weeks, the music television channel

will team up with THIRD EYE BLIND and EVE 6 for a fall college tour that will

make a stop at Southern CT State University on Sunday, November 1. The tour

will travel to over 20 campuses before it's finished.

MTV will launch the tour next week with a kick-off special on Thursday,

October 22, at 7 pm. A special will feature videos from both bands, as well as

interviews with band members, information about tour dates and

ticket-purchasing information. Highlights from the tour will also air on MTV

as special programming segments throughout the fall.

Each stop along MTV's Campus Invasion will feature a free daytime interactive

festival. Students and the public will have the opportunity to preview new

music videos from their favorite artists, experiment with computer-generated

music applications, play interactive music games, and audition for MTV shows.

In addition, Lifebeat and The Kaiser Foundation will participate in the

festival, making sexual health information and materials available to

concertgoers.

Speaking of all things campus, WXCI -- the radio station that's been plugging

away for years over at the WestConn campus in Danbury -- will celebrate its

25th anniversary this month during Homecoming Weekend. A party will be held

Saturday, October 24, at the Danbury campus featuring past and present disk

jockeys and station members from around the country. Of course, being a radio

station party, if you can't make it to the campus, just tune in to 91.7 FM to

listen in.

To commemorate the anniversary, WXCI will be producing a CD to be distributed

during its party, and then sold through the radio station. The CD will include

various moments from the history of the station, from DJ commentaries to

skits, promos, and some songs representing past eras.

On Saturday, former DJs will be given the chance to go back on the air for

hour-long time slots, with their choice of music to be played. The DJs might

need a map to find the party themselves: for the fifth time in the station's

history, the actual location of the studio has moved, this time to the second

floor of the brand-new Student Center.

Coming up later this month will be a special treat for anyone who enjoys Big

Band/swing music, whether from the new school or old. One of the original

bands that played this wonderful music, THE COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA, will be at

The Warner Theatre in Torrington on October 29. Tickets for the 8 pm concert

can be reserved by calling the theatre's box office, 860/489-7180. Prices are

$10 to $18 each, and all seats are reserved.

Guitarist JOHN TAYLOR will be pulling into Danbury for a show at Tuxedo

Junction on October 26. The show will include work from the musician's days

with both DURAN DURAN and THE POWER STATION (and what else, it's hard to

imagine...).

No name has been announced for the opener yet of MOTLEY CRUE's November 1 show

at the Oakdale in Wallingford, because the band hasn't yet been selected.

Throughout the Crue's current tour, the band is giving local bands in each

market a chance to open the show. The "Kickstart Your Career" promotion is

allowing aspiring musicians from each state to submit their tapes to local

drop-off locations. Connecticut bands can drop off two CDs or tapes, with bio

and picture, at the following locations: WCCC radio station, 1039 Asylum

Avenue in Hartford; LaSalle Music, 989 Farmington Avenue in West Hartford; or

LaSalle Music, 993 Main Street in East Hartford. Deadline for submissions is

October 23 at 5 pm.

Five finalists will be selected to compete in a Battle of the Bands, and the

winners will be band to share the stage with Motley Crue next month.

BLUES TRAVELER will be playing at the Oakdale Theatre Saturday, November 14.

Tickets for that show go on sale Saturday morning (Oct 17) at 10 am. Oakdale

tickets are available only through the theatre's box office (95 South Turnpike

Road in Wallingford; reserve at 265-1501) or by ordering through Advantix,

888/332-5600. Agents of Good Roots will be opening that show.

Tickets are still available for next weekend's concert by JOURNEY, who will be

at the Oakdale on Sunday, October 25. The band is touring with its new lead

singer, Steve Augeri (formerly of the band Tall Stories), new drummer Dean

Castranova, and supporting a new album, called Trial By Fire .

The FASTBALL show at Toad's Place in New Haven has been moved to November 5.

Tickets with the original November 1 date will be honored on Thursday. THE

NIELDS replace David Garza for opening duties, but JOAN JONES remains on the

bill.

Between October 1-4, Connecticut's state troopers gave out over 430 speeding

tickets or written warnings on the now-65 mph corridor that runs from Danbury

to the Middlebury-Waterbury line and the small section of Route 8 in Waterbury

that now also has a posted speed limit of 65 mph. Of that number, 142 of those

citations were tickets. Good Lord, Connecticut drivers! Get a grip on those

lead feet of yours. (I know, I should talk...)
