New Musical Will Be Presented In Bridgeport

As Annual Scholarship Program

BRIDGEPORT — On Saturday, May 5, at 9 pm, and Sunday, May 6, at 3 pm, Y’shaya Grama will be presenting the world premier of Esther: The New Musical by Myra K. Garvett at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 2385 Park Avenue.

The show is being produced in lieu of Ms Grama’s annual Cantor’s Concert and proceeds will benefit the Scholarship Program, sending students to Israel, Camp Ramah, the Jewish Theological Seminary, and many internal scholarships for the Talmud Torah.

The lively new musical, which is a contemporary spin on a classic biblical tale, has it all: a king, an ex-queen, a new queen, romance, court intrigue, a treacherous villain, a beauty contest, a belly dancer, a eunuch, and a score that the audience will be humming long after the show is over.

The 25-member case, made up of actors from all over Fairfield County, is talented and energetic. Professional musicians make up the seven-piece orchestra. The musical is opening at Congregation Rodeph Sholom but has the potential to become an off-Broadway limited engagement during the holiday of Purim.

The show is being directed by Karen Randazzo, who was the artistic director for the American Theatre Banquet Company, which toured throughout New England. She was selected to produce and direct Side By Side for the Sondheim Composer’s Festival. She also wrote and directed an original review of Leonard Bernstein’s work entitled Bernstein On Broadway, which Leonard Bernstein attended. (At the performance, Mr Bernstein himself stood up in the audience during the quintet from West Side Story and started to conduct.) Her new musical, Another Day in Paradise, will be produced this May at Downtown Cabaret.

The musical director for the show is Stan Wietrzychowski, who has been music director to stars such as Geraldine Fitzgerald and Otto Preminger and has performed at The White House for President and Mrs Jimmy Carter. His current Broadway collaboration is with Jack Lawrence, titled Time Remembered. He is professor of voice at the Hartt School.

General admission is $20, the majority of which is tax-deductible. Tickets may be purchased at the door or reserved in advance.
