Former Newtown resident Peter Zingoni, an eighth-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2000 National Hockey League entry draft, is now playing center for the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League.
The Phantoms are the AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and currently are sixth in the Eastern Division of the Eastern Conference at 22-29-2-5. In 41 games with the club, Zingoni has scored 13 goals and assisted in three others for 16 points. He has also served 53 minutes in the penalty box, according to statistics at www.hockeydb.com.
Just last week, the Phantoms visited the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Harbor Yard and a goal by Zingoni helped the Phantoms snap the Tigersâ nine-game home winning streak.
Zingoni played four years for Providence College, registering 34 goals and 47 assists in 127 games. In 2003-04, the year he graduated from Providence, he played in five games for the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL and registered two goals and two assists.
With the National Hockey League labor dispute wiping out the 2004-05 season, Zingoni left for the ice overseas and playing one season with the Essen Mosquitoes in Germany and notched 20 goals and nine assists while serving 109 penalty minutes in 32 games. That same year, he played in one game for TPS Turku and four games for the Pelicans in Finland but failed to register a goal or an assist.
In 2005-06, Zingoni returned to the United States and skated for the Trenton Titans of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and in 16 games scored two goals while assisting on three others as the Titans finished fifth in the Eastern Division of the American Conference at 31-36-5.
