Connecting The Vote In Today's Age

To The Editor:

As a new resident of the town, I have found the local election and voting system to have a flaw. One that presents a hurdle that leads to low voter turnout and disconnection in the community. That flaw: Communication.

Newtown wants to continue to bring in families, and that means younger demographics. This generation is busy and not always online for local news. Yet if you don't have a subscription to The Bee or live on Facebook, you simply don't know what's happening. How can we have a voice when information isn't freely available to those living offline?

I found out after the fact about the 106th District Democratic election. Out of 5,463 active, registered Democratic voters (as of October 2025), only 460 voted. That is just under 7.5%. People ask why no one votes. The answer is simple: we don't know about it.

How has Facebook become our town crier? I understand mail has a price, but if "Smanderson Windows" can mail me weekly about my perfectly functional windows, can our government not send a single mailer? Why can we put signage up for referendums but not for other important races such as these?

I do not wish to run in an election, nor do I wish to wrap my life in town meetings and politics. What I do wish is to be able to have a say in who is elected to be our voice.
