Glorydays: March 29, 1996
This week in 1991
Conrad Richards spakred a big fifth-period effort to lead the Knicks to a
25-21 championship game victory over the upstart Lakers who, behind the play
of Sean Pickwick, were making an upset bid in the Newtown Parks and Recreation
Intermediate Division Basketball finals. Richards hit three big baskets in a
row to put his team on top for good after they had trailed throughout the
contest. Mike Woodruff led the winners with ten points while Andrew Cousins,
Todd Badillo, and Mike Marusa all scored as well. The Knickes, coached by Mike
Marusa and Pat Barczak, were 9-2 on the season.
This week in 1986
67-year-old Newtown skier, Tom Griffith, capped a three-month long stretch of
competitive downhill, giant slalom, and slalom skiing on the slopes of
Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York by helping
the Norwalk Ski Club capture first place in the club and team categories of
the 1986 Chrysler/Plymouth All-American Ski Series in Melleayre, New York.
Griffith skied in all of the events including a dual giant slalom. He was the
oldest member of the four-man, two-woman, Norwalk team.
This week in 1981
Steve Medve pumped in 18 points and Scott Thoma added seven more as the
Pacers' balanced scoring attack offset a 30-point effort from Hawks' Dave
Constant in the Newtown Parks and Recreation Junior League basketball
championship. The Pacers won the game 45-43 and concluded the season at 9-2.
This week in 1976
Mark Alden, Bill Kelchner, and Andy Taubert all scored goals, but the Newtown
Pee Wees Hockey team was defeated 7-3 by a powerful New Milford squad to end
Newtown's first season on the ice. Other Newtown standouts that season
included Joe LaCroce, Rob Kalbaugh, Mike Seibert, and Tom Warzecha.
This week in 1971
The Annual Pinewood Derby of Cub Scout Pack 270 was held at Middle Gate
School. Division winners from each of the respective dens included Robert
Wein, Shawn Murray, Randy Archambault, Jim Kertesz, David Adams, Billy Heil,
and Brian Cook. The overall Pack winner was Stephen Kopnicki.
This week in 1966
Not only did the Sandy Hook Elementary School field an undefeated basketball
team, but it also pooled a squad of cheerleaders who could really yell. Making
up this energetic group were Kathy Heneghan, Susan Lucas, Marian Mattegat,
Suzy Albright, Robin Palmer, Sherry Knapp, and Susan Warner. The squad was
coached by Linda Tobin.
This week in 1961
A total of 25 canditates, of the 45 who registered, reported to coaches
Anthony Zaccara and Harold DeGroat for the first Newtown High baseball
workout. The season is scheduled to begin on April 25, and games will be
played at Hawley Field since there is no field behind the high school.
This week in 1956
Senior baseball seems due for a revival in Newtown following a meeting last
week in which an interested group of locals made their voices heard. The team,
the Newtown Baseball Club, elected Mike Kearns playing/manager and Jack
Rosenthal as playing/business manager. The team will hope to join the
Pomperaug League and will consist of Tom Kearns, Elzie Hunnicut, Ken Berglund,
Robert Dean, Jack Watkins, Randall Watkins, Charles Check, William Sheldon,
Charles Milot, Joe Cavanaugh, Chuck Botsford, Marv Shreders, Alvin Shreders,
Wayne Shreders, Tom Quigg, Ken Casey, and Fred Candee. An organizational
meeting will be held on Monday evening at the Sandy Hook Hotel.
This week in 1951
After 128 days on the front lines of the Korean combat zone (at the Korean
War), Newtown's Dick Dean - Private First Class - penned a three-page letter
to his buddies at the Social and Athletic Club of Sandy Hook. The letter,
which was partially published in The Newtown Bee read, " . . . it looks as
though we are going to be over here for a long time . . . I was happy to read
of the good record the SAC teams ran up in basketball. Remember me to them
all. Your friend always, Dick Dean. "
This week in 1946
Five Newtown Boy Scouts, Joseph Digilio, Dwight Johnson, Franklin Miller,
Fritz Heinmeyer, and Morris Eaton, started with a full pack of food and other
camping articles, and set off on a 15-mile hike through the woods and back
streets of Newtown. The Scouts' adventure was reported in The Newtown Bee,
written by Digilio.
This week in 1941
The Newtown FFA Basketball teams slashed with Housatonic Valley's teams.
Newtown's first team lost 40-20 despite nine points by Whittle and eight by
Kearns. The second team, though, was a big 38-4 winner, paced by the double
digit scoring efforts of Leibold and Hunnihan. Mayer scored nine and Richmond
seven in the Newtown win as well.
