‘Gardening For A Lifetime,’ Sunday

ROXBURY — Acclaimed author and gardener Sydney Eddison and illustrator Kimberly Day Proctor will explain “How to Garden Wiser as You Grow Older,” based on their new book, Gardening for a Lifetime, at Minor Memorial Library on Sunday, August 1, at 3 pm.

Ms Eddison, a Newtown resident who teaches at the New York Botanical Garden and is the author of numerous gardening books, has drawn on a lifetime of experience to suggest ways in which aging gardeners can continue to enjoy their passion as they deal with aching joints and other potential obstacles.

Her highly readable memoir provides tips (“make the most of containers ... accept imperfections”) as well as encouragement for those who have always loved their gardens and who are not ready to hang up their trowels.

Former Newtown resident Kim Proctor, an artist and landscape designer who helped design The Pleasance at 3 Main Street, did the line illustrations for the book.

“Sydney Eddison has spoken to enthusiastic audiences at our library in the past and we’re looking forward to learning more from her and Ms Proctor. We invite everyone who enjoys a garden, young or old, creator or spectator, to meet our guests and stroll through our Contemplation Garden” said Library Director Valerie Annis.

A reception will follow the presentation and there will be ample opportunity for questions from the audience and to purchase signed copies of Gardening for a Lifetime.

Tickets are $15, with proceeds to benefit the library. Minor Memorial, at 23 South Street, is handicapped-accessible. Call 860-350-2181 for additional information.
