Students Awarded for 2009–2010 School Year Accomplishments At NMS

The day after eighth grade students graduated during a commencement ceremony held at Western Connecticut State University’s O’Neill Center, seventh and eighth grade students gathered on the front lawn of Newtown Middle School, Tuesday, June 15, to receive awards and acknowledgements for achievements made during the 2009–2010 school year.

While NMS Principal Diane Sherlock said eighth grade students who attended the graduation ceremony the night before, would not be surprised by the awards they receive, each student who earned an award for the school year would be recognized during the award ceremony.

The Men-in-Green, a group of eighth grade boys who got together for their eighth grade science project this year, were recognized during the ceremony, among many other students. The group, according to Ms Sherlock, has won thousands of dollars for the school through its efforts to raise awareness in the community on deforestation and global warning as they worked toward earning recognition in the Lexus Eco Challenge.

“It’s a huge award,” said Ms Sherlock, “and we are really proud of you.”

A number of adults were also recognized during the ceremony, like social studies teacher Sue Kurkul, math teacher John Ventresca, and math teacher Nelson Poulter, who are retiring after years in the field. Language Arts teacher Kathy McGivern was also recognized for her time at the school, and will be leaving the field after finishing her duties for the 2009–2010 school year.

Another adult recognized during the event was NMS PTA president Maggie Conway.

Despite a relatively hard budget year, Ms Sherlock said, “Never once did she get discouraged. Never once did she run away.”

Ms Sherlock asked for a big round of applause for Ms Conway from the assembled crowd.

As students were recognized for the different awards, teachers either asked them to stand up in their place to be recognized or to walk forward to receive their award.
