Local Democrats Like Dodd For President

At its March meeting, the Newtown Democratic Town Committee voted unanimously to endorse Senator Chris Dodd in his campaign to become the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. In addition, Newtown Democratic Town Chair Earl Smith gave his personal endorsement to Sen Dodd, as did Newtown First Selectman Herbert Rosenthal.

“I have known Chris Dodd for over 25 years,” said Mr Smith. “Chris Dodd has always been a good friend to the people of Newtown, and we have been proud to have him represent us in the United States Senate. We know Chris Dodd is the right person to lead our party and our country, and we know he can win.”

“I am honored to have the support of the Newtown Democrats, and particularly of their leaders, Chairman Earl Smith and First Selectman Herb Rosenthal,” said Sen Dodd. “It is exactly this kind of early, enthusiastic support that is going to make the difference in my campaign, and I am thrilled to have these fine people by my side.”

Mr Smith noted that Mr Dodd was the guest speaker at a party celebrating his retirement from the position of town chair in 1980, when Mr Dodd was a first-time candidate for the United States Senate.

“I was happy to be able to help Chris Dodd win a seat in the Senate many years ago, and now I’m excited to be a part of his next great victory, too,” Mr Smith said.

By making its endorsement on March 8, Newtown’s Democratic Town Committee became one of the first committees to formally endorse the senator’s candidacy.

“We’re almost a year away from the first votes being cast in this primary election, and already, local Democrats are lining up to offer their support to Chris Dodd,” said Sarah Merriam, Connecticut Political Director for the Dodd campaign.

In related news, Sen Dodd issued a statement this week in response to Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz’s announcement that she will support moving Connecticut’s presidential primary to February 5.

“Moving Connecticut’s presidential primaries to February 5th will give Connecticut voters an important opportunity to help choose the next President of the United States, while also bringing more focus to the caucuses and primaries held before that date,” Sen Dodd said.
