MOUNTAIN for 1/5/96

A lot of my feline pals tell me they are glad that they aren't black cats.

They don't want people saying "Here comes bad luck," every time they cross a

path. But I don't mind. It's their problem not mine. In fact, I heard a story

this week that makes argument for black being a good luck color for cats.

Two weeks ago on a snowy night, Kim Flynn and her friend, Maureen, found a

black cat freezing to death near the intersection of Hattertown Road and Wiley

Lane. The saw him because his black coat stood out against the snow.

Named Sweet Pea because it's so affectionate and sweet, the Flynn's brought

the cat to the vet where it was diagnosed as having a cold. Kim has been

nursing him back to health and would like to keep him, but her family already

owns four cats. She is hoping to find the owners of the neutered, indoor cat,

but may need to find an adoptive home for him with people "who will take good

care of him and give him lots of attention." If you have room in your heart

and home for a playful, black "fur-ball," call Kim at 426-1458.

There was only one entry in The Bee's First Baby Contest by the time we went

to press this week, but I won't spill the beans about who it was because

technically the deadline for entering isn't until 10 am on Friday.

I can tell you who Newtown's first baby was 25 years ago. Happy birthday to

Melissa McMahon who was born on New Year's Day in 1971.

The customers at George's Pizza are feeling a little less regal these days

since someone stole the sign proclaiming "The Customer Is King." A reward of

$75 has been put up for the sign, which in addition to the inscription has a

lion on it.

There once again seems to be a shortage of "W"s - a shortage that only seems

to strike whenever someone is trying to spell Newtown. This time the "W" is

missing from windshield decals ordered by the Hook and Ladder Fire Company for

its members.

Those who remember former Main Street residents Madonna and Bill Snyder will

be pleased to hear that their son, Darren, 26, former chef at Pasta Fresca,

has opened his own restaurant, Darwoods, on Bank Street in New Milford.

Darren, who is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, is operating

the restaurant with his wife, Amy Mounts, a former Newtowner who got a degree

in architecture from Virginia Tech but is now co-owner of Darwoods.

We heard from Sue Hyde, who used to work for The Bee until she moved to

Florida eight years ago. Sue and her husband, Ron, still read The Bee and were

interested in the article which appeared recently about Mrs Parsons at

Nunnawauk Meadows who received an electric bill for more than $9,000. Sue

works at Sweetwater Homes in Homosassa Springs and received a three-month

electric bill for $7,566.38 for one unfinished house. Sue was amused but not

concerned because she said she talks to Florida Power Corporation "at least

three times a week" about other building related problems. Florida Power told

her to throw the bill in the trash. Nonetheless, the following month, Sue

received notice that the entire bill had been turned over to the Credit and

Collections Department.

I think I'll leave a little early today. It's sleeting and snowing out, and

the ice us building on the sidewalk. Even with my claws sharpened, it's

treacherous going. (But at least you can see me in the snow.) You might

consider doing the same, when the weather is bad. Go early, go slowly, but be

sure to get back here in time to...
