Auctions Are Coming To Newtown

Jack and Rosie DeStories will open Fairfield Auction in Newtown later this month. The gallery will be located in the Sonics and Materials Complex at 53 Church Hill Road.

At 7,000 square feet, the facility is among the largest in New England and will host regular estate auctions of antiques, fine art, jewelry and other estate goods every six to eight weeks. The newly remodeled gallery has been designed specifically for auctions and features state-of-the-art computer and sound systems.

Fairfield Auction will conduct its first auction on Memorial Day Monday, May 28. The sale will include antique furniture, lighting, paintings, carpets, jewelry, and other accessories. The company maintains a Web site at www.fairfieldauction.com, which provides an online catalog with images and estimates.

Previews are open to the public Saturday and Sunday prior to each sale from 1 to 6 pm each day and on auction day from 9 to 11 am. The gallery can be reached at 364-1555.

The DeStories had been principals in a large West Coast auction gallery for 15 years before moving to Newtown last year with an eye on establishing themselves in the area.

“We see Newtown as a very ideal location,” said Jack DeStories. “It is easily accessible to buyers from New York to Hartford. Additionally, Newtown itself has a strong sense of history and I think we’ll find enthusiasm here for our family-run business. So far we’ve had many positive responses and we’ve already received some terrific consignments.

“Our goal is to make auctions less intimidating and more fun,” he continued. “We provide a catalog with estimated prices and we guarantee items to be as described. We are also happy to discuss the merits and flaws of any given item.

In addition to estate auctions, Fairfield Auction will offer consulting and coordination in fundraising auctions and real estate auctions. Rosie DeStories is one of the country’s leading fundraising auctioneers. She has worked with groups such as American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, San Jose Civic Light Opera, and The Tech Museum of San Jose. The couple has also managed numerous real estate auctions for governments, developers and individuals.
