Robert W.    Mayer, Sr

Longtime Fairfield Hills Employee

Robert W. Mayer, Sr, 81, died February 12 after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Newtown, Mr Mayer was born on June 24, 1925. He was one of four children born to Fred and Ivy Mayer.

Mr Mayer graduated from Hawley High School in 1943 and attended the University of Bridgeport. He proudly served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the United States Navy 53rd Construction Battalion from 1943 to 1945 and was in the Naval Reserve.

Mr Mayer was employed by Fairfield Hills Hospital for more than 40 years in various positions until his retirement in 1991 as the assistant business manager for the facility. He was a volunteer member of Newtown Hook & Ladder and the Fairfield Hills Fire Department for many years.

He was an avid outdoorsman, and is best remembered for his beekeeping, the maintenance of many special properties in Newtown, and his love for his orchard and vegetable garden. His memory will be treasured by his wife and children for his gentle humor, devotion as a husband and father, and many wonderful summers spent with him on Cape Cod.

He is survived by his wife, Anne, of Southbury; a daughter, Carol, of Bethlehem; a son, Robert and his wife, Laura, of Newtown; and two sisters, Amy Cable of Cheshire and Ruth Liska of South Thomaston, Maine. He was predeceased by a brother, George, of Newtown.

Memorial donations may be made to the Connecticut American Parkinson’s Disease Association at Connecticut Chapter ADPA, 27 Allendale Drive, North Haven CT 06473.

Interment will take place in the spring at the Newtown Village Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are in care of the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.
