‘Illusions Of Gossamer’ At Roxbury Library

ROXBURY — “Illusions of Gossamer,” an exhibit of photographs by Lucy Sander Sceery of East Hampton, will open at Minor Memorial Library with a public reception on Saturday, March 24, from 2 to 4 pm, and will continue during regular library hours through Monday, April 30.

For more than 20 years, Ms Sceery has been using the tobacco sheds and fields of the Connecticut River Valley as subjects for her art — photography, oil paintings, encaustics, pastels, printmaking, and assemblage.

The centerpiece of her Roxbury exhibit will be images of the netting covering the fields, which the artist has transferred onto silk chiffon to enhance the tranquil beauty of her photographs. Writing in Art New England, critic Steve Sarger said, “The cloth coverings seem to breathe, or sigh, as they float over the fields.”

Ms Sceery has shown her work at galleries and juried shows throughout the Northeast, winning awards at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Discovery Museum and Planetarium in Bridgeport, and elsewhere. Her art is also included in numerous private and corporate collections.

The library is open Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm; Monday, noon to 7 pm; Wednesday, 10 am to 7 pm; and Thursday and Friday, 10 am to 5 pm. Call 860-350-2181 for information and directions. Minor Memorial Library, at 23 South Street, is handicapped-accessible.
